THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT,
A young man* named Robert Jas. Sorrenson was charged, at the' Patea Court with failing to enrol under the Military Service Act, 1916. ; Defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Armour said he met the accused and asked him to produce his card of enrolment. Accused was unable to do so. On making further* enquiries from the Government Statistician, lie found that the accused was.enrolled -n the Second Division as a married man. The accused was not married. ! Defendant said he had sigt«Lall the papers necessary. . His Worship-: Are you enrolled as a married man or not?
Defendant admitted that the'"signature on the enrolment card which stated / that accused was married was his. ■ ; His Worship: Who wa s it put in your enrolment card that you had a- weak heart and was ruptured? Defendant: A man--named ■, Brown >.■ filled in-my card for-me. ■ .:
His Worship : Instead of putting in M in the place where you "are to state / whether you are single or married you --A. put the full word "married." Are you " married? Defendant: No. Constable Armour said the'defendant- ■ was recently ordered to pay for the maintenance of an ille o itimate child at an industrial school. ' .
The Bench ordered defendant to* be sent to gaol for three months; .he may be called upon as a member of th^irifc Division at any time. If reject as' medically unfit, he will ba-returned t< gaol to serve the sentence.
