NEGRO SAILORS QUARREL

A SATURDAY NIGHT INCIDENT

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. A serious shooting and stabbing affray took place aboard the. steamer Kaikoura, lying at King's Wharf, late on Saturday night. At about 10-15 p.m., it is alleged, John Marshall and .Reginald Pierre, two svanien belonging to the crew came back to the vessel apparently the worse for liquor. They went forward to the forecastle, whsre another seaman (Gershoum Simmonds) was lying in his bunk, and Marshall and Pierre being rather rowdy when they cam,o in, Simmonds reonstrated with them. They resent%d this, and a row commenced hetween the thr.ee men. It is alleged that during the disturbance Marshall drew a revolver and fired two or three sihots, none of which, however, took effect. Simmonds then wrested the weapon from Marshall's hands, and further scuffling took place between the three men, m the course of which it is stated Simmonds produced a razor and used it on. the other two. Both of the men were cut about a good deal . The men were parted, and the police telephoned for. Sergt. O'Halloran and Constable C. Murphy quickly arrived on the scene. Dr. Henry was also called in, and did what he could for Marshall and Pierre, but their wounds were so serious that he considered it advisable to have them both removed to the nospital. Simmonds was arrested, and will be brought up at. the Magistrate's Court to-morrow morning on a charge of causing actual bodily harm to the other two men.

Upon inquiry at the hospital to-day is was learned that Pierre, who is cue about the right arm and shoulder, was progressing favo\irably; but Marshall, who liad several bad though not serious gashes aTjout the head and a big cut down through the abdomen, is not doing too well. All the three men concerned are negroes, natives of the West Indies.
