BULGARS RETIRING NORTHWARDS.

SERBIANS MAKE ADVANCE TQWAftiS OLP MM*

ROUMANIANS NEED ASSISTANCE.

ENEMY MAKING VICIOUS ONSLAU3KIT M RHyMANIA.

FRANCO-BRITISH PROGRESS.

GROUND GAINED HORTH AND SOUTH ©F PIROfiKE.

The news this morning is generally reassuring in character. There are mdicatio s that the Bulgarians are evacuating Monastir, possibly as the result of the Allied advance in the Struma, which would threaten' their communications. On t-ha Somme the British have forced their front lines nearer to Bapaun^, and east of Combles. Venizelos has taken over the reins of administration in Greece. Hindenburg with a huge army, is moving upon Roumania, and in the Roumanian Parliament M. Oasilesco appeals pathetically to the Allies for help That they will do, and are doing, their utmost, cannot be doubted, but there fare only two things that can he done. One is to pour all possible Russian reinforcements into Roumania; the other i 8 to weaken Hmdenburg's forces by making attacks along other fronts which will make him deflect and deplete his army. Strong Russian reinforcements are reported to be arriving at Salonika and it is practically certain that the Roumanians are being substantially augmented by Russian forces. In a powerful speech in the Commons yesterday and received late last night, Mr Lloyd George said the Government were fully alive to the necessity for rendering the fullest assistance to

Roumania. - The cables inform us thai after a long conference President Wilson and Mr Lading agree that Germany has kept her pledges. This in face of the fact that the captains of^at least two of +:.e vessels recently submarined off Nantucket Island swear that their .hips were sunk without warning. ApnarenW America is going to be satisfied with any German course of action as as American lives and trade are protected.
