THE GARRISON BAND.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln common with many others, 1 was surprised to see that the Garrison Band pumosed making an effort to raise the funds necessary for a trip to the Ciiristchurch Contest. The Alexandra Band gave them a lead that they might well have followed, seeing that the Empire is engaged in\a life and death struggle, the horrors and hardships of which have never been equalled. We often profess to be shocked ac the thought that Nero fiddled while Rome was burning, but how much better are we if we supply for band contest trips money that is so urgently needed in helping to relieve the sufferings of the victims of German brutality ? In any case the. contest will be a tame affair, as there will be only one first-class band to compete against, and it -ssill have to play with a large number of. substitutes owing to the war. The contest would not be worth the expenditure even if the war was not on, but seeing it is on the least the Band can do is to be content to go without its trip this year and thus enable a much more deserving cause to benefit. Hoping that the attempt to collect funds for the Band will meet with the fate it merits.- —I am, etc., "MARS."
