GREATFORD GRAVEL PIT.

TARANAKI SUPPLIES WANTED.

RANGITIKEI COUNTY'S SCHEME.

There is a valuable gravel pit at Greatford, winch the Rangitikei County Council propose using. The Public Works Department has also had its eye on the same pit, but when it ascertained the County Council's scheme, further advances were delayed until definite assurances were received from the Council, firstly as to whether the .Council would be prepared to supply the requirements of other local bodies in and around Taranaki, if they desired to obtain supplies of gravel from the Council, and secondly whether arrangemoats bad been made Avith the railway, authorities for the conveyance of gravel over their lines. The position as stated by the Public Works Department is tnis- — the department was considering the .question of making the necessary r\rrangements to supply local bodies with gravel when complaint was :na/!e by the county engineer that the dup;\ "t----ruent's proposal would interfere -vith a scheme which he was working out fur adoption by the Council. The Jepartwent maintained that it did not; wish to conflict with the Council's wishes if it could "be avoided, but it did desire to facilitate local bodies obtaining gravel in the near future at a reasonable rate. If the Council was prepared to supply this and had made arrangements accordingly with the Railway Department, well and good; if not, then the Public Works Department stated that it must consider the matter.

The Council went further into the question on Saturday, and it was decided to notify the department that it was the intention to put in a railway siding up to the pit at Greatford, and to supply other local bodies with gravel at as reasonable a rate as possible. . ■
