LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT.

A narrow escape from a very serious accident took place at the gasworks railway crossing as the first train was arriving this morning from Hastings. . A taxi-driver, John Black, bad got his car (right on to the metals before Tie observed that the train was upon him. He made a desperate effort to swerve offy but the engine, caught the rear wheel and carried the car into the cattle stop, completely wrecking it. Black was thrown some distance with considerable force, but escaped with a severe cut oa the head. The crossing is a very dangerous one, several fatalities having, occurred' there, and the Government has been repeatedly urged to install on alarm.
