Andromeda, a four-masted barquentine left New York January 20th, via Auckland.
The Tyser liner Hawke's Bay is due at Wellington on Friday from Lyttelton to complete Homeward loading. The cargo steamer Cairncross, which arrived at Wanganui yesterday to load for Home ports, under charter to the New IZealand Snipping Co., is the first vessel to visit the Southern Hemisphere under geared turbine propulsion. In view of the fact that the Union Cb.'s "well-known intercolonial liner Maheno will shortly have geared turbines installed, the visit of the Oairncross to the Dominion "has aroused a great deal of interest amkmg imiarine engineers. The Cairncross is the only cargo steamer at the present time which is propelled by this iype of engine. The vessel is practically a new steamer, of 4016 grosg and 2513 net tons. She was built fin 1912 at Sunderland.. by Messrs W. Doxford and . Sons, and was launched in January 1913. The vessel is owned by the Cairn Line of steamships, and is in every respect a modern cargo carrier. She is fitted with all the latest appliances for the rapid handling, of cargo, is also lilted with submarine signalling apparatus. The Cairncross is due afc Wellington about the end of this week from Wanganui to complete her Homeward loading. The vessel will sail from Wellington about April 2nd for London.
