Prof Malladra and two companions descended 1200 feet into the crater of Vesuviu)s. They found the inside a funnel, and at the bottom of the crater an enormous fiery cavern. They lost the thermometers through a steel rope fusing. Previous to the mishap, the thermometers registered 616. Fahrenheit.
