CHURCH AND TREE DESTROYED

VISITATION AT RATA

(By Our Travelling Reporter.) A few days ago I mentioned that a rumour was current in M&rton that a church bad been destroyed by ligihtning n.?iar Rata. The occurrence ha* now been confirmed, the church having been located between Rata and Porewa. A big flash of lightning struck the building and in a few minutes the structure had gone up in smoke. The lightning al&o shattered ia large tree near Rata at the same time, and it, too, burst into flames. The tree took two days to consume. Tho lightning was very severe, and oldest residents state that they n^ver saw such a brilliant display for the short tim.e it lasted. It was short, sharp and de'sructive. The church destroyed wns prized ill'ho district for its oarlv associations.
