A DELIGHTFUL CONCERT.

MRS C. I. SPILLANE A>ND PUPILS

Great as is the attraction of world celebrities when' they comJo to ois _ at the zenith of their famie 3 -■ therel is_ a special pleasure—a sort of ■parochial pride "by no means unpardonaible—when th. artists who entertain us 'happen to be locally trained. The performers may be amateturs, may perhaps be young and mere beginners in the study of the dvine art, but their civic kinship commends them to our warm appreciation, and if they acquit themselves with credit, well, so much the bettor. There can be no two opinions as to the excellence 'of last slight's concerted yen by Mrs C. I." SpilJane and pupils in St. Paul's Hall. • The lengthy programme was one of which any teacher might •well be proud, for it was indeed a, budgelt of Vocal gemls a-eprese'ntaitive of many of the worlds-greatest and most popular composers. Not only -were the items good of themselves, 'but they were without exceptionr artistically presented in a manner which ibetoken careful and - capable tuition. Particularly noticeable was the clear enunciation which characterised practically every item, the 'singers giving the audience the full benefit of the words they sang, and showing at the same time an intelligent appreciation of the spirit 'and purpose of the composer's creation. Conspicuous; 'too,-, was the numerical strength and individual quality of the male voices, no foiwer than seven in number, which figured prominently in the evening's entertainment. Both Mr and Mrs iSpillane contributed liberally to the programme, which was given in its entirety as under: ' PaiTfi eong, "Lovely May" (German); song, "Mountain Lovers" (Squire), Mr D. McCarthy; son.g, "My Dreamland Rose" (Phillips), Miss'Matheson; song, "0 my Garden full of Roses" (Clarke), Miss Richardson; song, "'The Two Grenadiers" (Schumann). Wood, and Mr. McCarthy; song, "Thou'rt passing hence" "(Sullivan), Mr McLean; song, "The Waking of Spring" (Del Riego), Misw K. Wood; duet. "Keys of Heaven" (arranged fby H. Franz), (c) "The love of my heart" (WMte)', Mrs Sfnillnne ; and part song, "Slumber Song" (Lohr). <by the whole company. A delightful finale to a

thoroughly delightful concert. The fact that the length of the programme nxade it necessary to prohibit encores did not prevent the large audience from onthusiastdcally manifesting .their appreciation, and applause was both frequent and hearty. Mrs Spillane and her pupils have every reason to 'be pl'.;asec. with the success of this year's concert
