LONDON, Dec. 13. The House of Commons, 'by 266 to 166, irejected Mr Hatterdley's dause making the Union Jack the Irish flag. Mr McVeagh, in a flippant speech, asked why Ireland was forbidden to do what1 every■ colony and Dominion was allowed. .
Mr< Birrell said a oomTtulsoty flag would not -encourage loyalty. Compulsory loyalty was as impossible as compulsory religion or >Greek. '
Mr Balfbur denounced Mr McVea^h for ridiculing the Union Jack. He recalled the United States' insistence on the symbolism of the national flag. Mr Redmond sand the Union Jack would fly at Dublin -as the symbol of Empire. Alongside it -would (be 'the green flag, the sign of local nationality, whereof every Inishmian -was proud. The Bill piassed through comimiittee. The Liberals enthusiastically cheered tho Premier and Ministers.
