ISLAND STEAMER ON FIRE.
S.S. HAUROTO AT AUCKLAND
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 12
The Union Company's island steamer Bauroto, which has been anchored in tho stream for about two weeks, was discovered to .be on fire at 2-20 this morning. One life boat-was destroyed. Tho damage is estimated at £800. Onljr the watchman was on board the H-auroto. He gave the alarm by ringing the ship's bell. Two constables proceeded in a motor launch to the steamer, which 'was moored off NorthcoteOn learning there "was a serious outbreak of fire, the police returned and roused tho captain and crew of the harbour tug Awhina, which is kept ready for such an emergency, with the result that the fire was effectively attacked and subdued after a/bout three hours. The fire spread from the cabin, in which it started through the pantry and 'below the bridge to the captain's room on the .bridge. The flames rose as high as the funnel, the ventilators being scorched.
