A LIVE CHURCH.
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "Chronicle.")
.PALMERSTON N., Oct. 28
The remarkable vitality of the Konian Catholic Church at Palmerston North was revealed an 'incident which happened yesterday. To tell the story properly, it is necessary to go back to a fortnight ago, when Father Murray was concluding two weeks' of revival work here. In his concluding address he remarked on the crowded state , of : -TiSt. Patrick's Church, and nsed these words " In contrast with the big congregations which your church is asked to accommodate, it is more fitted to Tiny Town." The desire for a new church had previously been entertained, and the contemplated removal of St. Patrick's College from ton to Palmerston emphasised the need. These words of Father Murray, however, brought the desire to a, crisis, and the local authorities turned the prevailing enthusiasm to good account. Following on Friday's decision of the women to hold a monster bazaar in November of next year, the men were summoned to a meeting after Mass yesterday at noon. Addresses were delivered by Father CosteUa and proraiiicnt laymen, and a subscription started. Une promise of £500 and five of £100 each were promptly made, and before the proceedings terminated a, total of £1500 was promised. Such an avalanche of money is, I think, unprecedented in Palmerston. The to-' ; tal amount required is put at £8000. It is intended to lay the foundation stone at the end of next year, about the time when the monster bazaar is to be held.
