DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN EVANGELIST.

(Per Press. Association.) WELLINGTON, August 15. Mr William Corric Johnston, a wellknown evangelist, died somewhat unexpectedly at ids residence, Roy Street, Newtown, early on Sunday 'morning, aged 65 years. Th.c deceased, who had been a, resident of the Dominion for about 28 years, was a native of Scotland. A stonemason by occupation, \he utilised his,evenings in university, study and took degrees. He forked -with Sankey and Moody in America and the United Kingdom. Failure of health brought him to New Zealand, and the clnnato suiting him, he made his permanent residence here. Mr Jolmsto-nc laboured very successfully • throughout the> Dominion, especially in Dune-din, Port Chalmers, and Christchurch: On one -occasion he had made such a deep impression with his preaching in Port Chalmers that a special train was put on from Dunedin for th© benefit; ot those who desired to hear him in Christchureh at the Theatreßßoyals. s He came into prominence for his exposure of the teachings of A. B. ' Worthington. He was a man thoroughly devoted to the evangelical cans© in. which he had practically spent his lifetime. One of !his addresses entitled "God's Ledger,".:for business-men, was particularly in request. For some time he had been engaged in writing, a series of books upon the special phase of work which had occupied his lifetime. The .deceased, who leaves a widow and three children, had only beTen ill a fortnight. He was well known in Australia, where ho conducted missions. .
