THE FENCE REMOVED

The residents of Alma Road are evidently determined not. to submit to the closing of the right-of-way of tb- T

Racecourse until the right of the jocKey Chib to do so has been legally demonstrated. On Saturday evening the obobjectionable obstruction was1, for the third time in succession, pulled down. There was nothing disorderly or vindictive in the demonstration. Two of the Club's officials, one of whom was Caretaker Webb, had been deputed to watch th« fence, and at about 7.30 some fifteen residents of. the locality who had, as they put it, assembled for the purpose of "going to town as usual," quietly informed the Club's representatives, that they proposed to go via the usual way, and that in order to do :o it would be necessary for them to re:i" ye the obstruction. Prior to this the rc.\ who were re-erecting the portion of ihe fence were similarly informed, and j -nlarly requested to be good enough ti make the job easy by putting in sv.il! nails. This request, however, was not Complied with, for when the contingent of practical objectors proceeded to remove the obstruction they found it liberally studded with four-inch nails. This, it goes without saying, was not strong enough to withstand the force of their objection, and the fence came clown. The following correspondence shews tl-at the objectors acted in a perfectly open way, and that they intended their action to be regarded as a practical protest against what they consider to be the unnecessary and unjustifiable deprivation of a long-estab-lished right:— Alma Road, July 3, 1909.
