HALCOMBE NOTES.

(From €ur Own Correspondent.) A very sad incident occurred last week, viz., the suicide of poor Fred Grantham. The young fellow had lived here all his lire, and was very generally liked. It appears that he had some hallucination as to having libelled some people, and dreaded the consequences, but those who knew him are convinced that this would not be the case, as he always bore the reputation of owning a bright cheerful disposition and never given to slander. However, he has gone, and let no one cast a stone. To his agred parents, brothers, and sisters utmost sympathy is felt. The funer .1 took place last Friday, the Rev. Mr Walker officiating. May he rest in peace. A meeting of the Athletic dub was held in Mr Laurie Siegel's room on Saturday night, Mr iMilo Kew being voted to the chair.—Mr Adam reported that Messrs Lukashefsky, Bell, and. himself had inspected the ground with a view of making a larger culvert to carry off.flood water, and gave their views as to the best method of so doing.—Mr Robson proposed, and Mr Goebel seconded, that the meeting accept Mr George Kew's kind offer to disc and harrow the ground, which will be done almost immediately.—'Mr Owen McElroy . then kindly offered to send a man with a team and roller as soon as the harrowing was finished, and a very hearty vote of thanks "was carried.—lt was resolved that as soon as the discing, harrowing, and rolling had been , done a geij&ral meeting of all the clubs .be. called to consider and push on further improvements.—Proposed by Mr Adam, seconded by Mr Robson, that Mr Bradbiiry be convenor of the next meeting, and a week to be devoted to make it generally known and secure a good attendance. , Immediately after this meeting the Cricket Club held a discussion, and it was decided to hold a general meeting next Tuesday, the, loth ' inst., in Mr Siegel' s rpPm^at : 8 jpjni •» when;1 the elecA tipnAof officers for :"tfe. ensuing^ season enjoj^fe 7 ierventng-is;fw^eip'atlidir.'■; j:
