THE UPOKONGARO FERRY.

A meeting of ratepayers of the Upokongaro district was held last evening at tho Upokongaro Hotel, to discuss the action of the \\ Tangariui County Council in dosing the Upokongaro ferry. A: largf> number of-representative people of the district were.present, and Mr. Hammond was elected 'chairman.

Mr. Hammond said he had only been in the'district » short .time, but quite long enough to ,see that tha ferry .was badly needed, and should not have been closed. . '." ' •" ■ •■;-. '.■•■'

Mr. Donald Ross, said that twelve years ago the amount: of nrofit derived from the ferry amounted to £400, the .-proceeds'-" of which were expended throughout the district. The Council's statement as to the ferry being, worked at a loss, seemed wrong. The Council, soon after the ferry was opened, had arranged- with the Waitotara County Council to take the ferry under their control and therefore they should continue to keep it open.
