SCHOOL COMMITTEES POWERS

WELLINGTON, September 4. A deputation representing 346 School Committees of the colony waited on the Premier to-day, and drew attention to tho need for amendment of the Education Act in the direction of making more explicit the provision for the consultation of committees by, Education Boards in the appointment and removal of teachers.

The Premier agreed that the matter was of considerable importance, and that the present condition of affairs needed alteration. There should be so meting more definite than now prevailed. If committees were to have powers they should be defined. If their duties were to be merely perfunctory, legislation should say so. He was satisfied that committees should have greater powers than now, and there should be a higher authority who should, settled disputes. He advised the deputation to embody its request in a petition to Parliament.
