At the Anglican Diocesan Synod, a resolution was carried recognising the great amount of evil resulting from, the, licensed sale of alcoholic beverages, and expressing hearty sympathy with the efforts now Joeing made to temedy the An amendment, substituting the words "immediate use" for. "licensed sale," found four clergy as supporters, but tho resolution, after a; warm, debate, was carried practically unam^. mously, tho noes being silent. _ A proposal to place on record that tho motion was carried unanimously was not proceeded with. The four clergy objected that they were opposed to the motion in its accepted form. A resolution was also carried that the Synod views with alarm the spread of gambling, and pledges itself to do itsutmost to stem the evil. In the course of tho debate lotteries at church bazaars, art unions for "mineral specimens," and generally, the totalisator and b&tting at races, football, and cricket, was condemned as the most prevalent form of gambling. The West Coast clergy bewailed the almost universal prevalence of "two up" gambling on the Coast. Tha Synod has now closed.
