CATHOLIC SOCIAL AND DANCE.

A BRILLIANT SUCCESS

Tho first Catholic social and dance proved more than the success that its most sanguine promoters anticipated, and after all, this success was but the reward of patient labour of the committee during the last six weeks, and especially during the last few days, when the final preparations were in full swing. For the nonce, the Drill Hall was transformed, in to a gaily decorated ballroom, and the decorations, in bunting, flags, and native plants, were effective and in good taste. # Certainly, the committee and".their^willing assistants deserve great praise fop: their efforts in this direction. .{Dancers were loud in their praise?, of the' flfpr; which wan splendidly . prepared; byjitthe committee. ~ The secretaries)' Meslsrs. E. J. McLachlan; aml'Ei 'P. LqftO£, were untiring in their efforts -to about tho success of the..gathering.; At 8 o'clock the" first dance began, and ahout 9 o'clock there were" 250; on the floor, and tho majority remained until the close, thus showing that nothing was lacking to secure the enjoyment of those present. Interspersed with the dances were several songs and musical items, the contributors iri this, direction being Mis 3 Kiely, Messrs. Bailey, Hogan, Buckley, and Brunette. As a guarantee of tho quality of the music provided, it is only necessary to mention that th« instrumentalists were Mrs. Lockett (piano); Messrs. Buckley (cornet), Staffan (violin),, and Brunette (clarionette). A splenidid supper, provided by the Ladie^ Committee, was served at 11 o'clock, andy as usual when the Catholic ladies of Wanganui undertake anything of. tho kind, there was nothing to be desired that was not there^ During the evening tho V«ry Rev. Dean Grogan and Rev.-Father Bartley (St. Patrick'?College) wero present. In a report, however brief, mention should be made of tho excellent work done by the M.C'Si Messrs. Dennehy, O'Shea, E. J. McLaehlan, and F. J. Loftus. We learn from tho secretary the financial aspect ii most satisfactory, and as a result the fund for which the social was intended will be considerably augmented. Tho following ladies and gentlemen kindly played extras:—Miss Whitakw, Mrs. Sykes ? arid Mr. A. S. Dobbs. Ib may bo mentioned that Mr. Purser provided the drapings and furnishings, and otherwise lent the committee valv.&bli assistance.
