MARION, Saturday. Tho ordinary monthly meeting of th* &bovo Council war, held to-day. _ Present: Crs. Marshall (chairman), Simpson, Smith, Fraser, Aldworth, Evan and A. McGregor. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Beckett and Holden. Correspondence was read and dealt jvith as follows:— . From It. Lyon. jun., asking tor compensation in consequence 'ot delay in ilelivery of timber at Lilburn s bridge. —Resolved, on the motion of tho Chairman, seconded by Cr. Simpson, that tho Council regrets being unable to recognisa any claim. . From G. W. Sherson, ro carting licenses being available for Kiwitea and this county.—Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by tr. iUe-o-peo-or, that the Kiwitea Council be notified that, Mr. George Sherson has carting licenses in tins county. From Messrs. A. C. Ward and Robb, ■objecting to proposed loan tor Alanga-iveka-Mataroa road.—Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr Fraser, that consent forms be sent to Messrs. Ward and Robb to apply tor ■tho expenditure of their 'thirds as * li^ro Cm&B?'F. Lethbridge, asking that two culverts on Turakina Valley road "*e lowered—Left with the inspector to attend to. . . if,. From 0. Allen, re raising funds foi Lilburn's bridge.- Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Simpson, that a separate rate be struck over the portion of tho county .benefiting by the erection ot Lilburn s bridge to pay off the balance ot cost, over and above the Government subSKFrom Mrs. A. Pole, complaining of flooding of her property at Mangaweka. —Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. McGregor, that a reply bo sent that no liability attaches'to the Council for the flooding of the creek complained of, and it be recommended that those interested .raise a loan to straighten the course. Scott, asking that a road bo laid off to the sea beach at bcott s ferry, also drawing attention to the condition of the river protective works. —Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Fraser, that Mr. Thorns be instructed to report on the matter by next meeting. . From Ellis Bros., suggesting certain work to prevent flooding at Ons.ow ■street, Ohingaiti.—Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by •Cil- Aldworth, that the culvert recommended bo put in. . From McGregor Bros., notnying that ■tbfi creek on tho road through Maput'ahi requires attention to make it passable for horso traffic—Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. A. McGregor, that the matter be referred to the inspector to attend From tho New Zealand Counties' Association, circular re proposed legislation in connection with local government.—Resolved^ on the motion of Cr. Simpson, seconded by Cr. A. McUre«or, that the Chairman be appointed to represent this Council at the meeting From M. Crowley, asking that tram crossings on Mangapapa road be removed.—Resolved, on the motion ot tho Chairman, seconded by Cr. Simpson, that a final notice be sent to Mr. Knight, giving him 14 days to remove ■pressings on Mangapapa road, as previously notified, otherwise permission will bo withdrawn to place a tram line on the road at all. . Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. McGregor, that application be made to the Land Board to apply the "thirds" from sections fronting Mangaweka-Taihape main road to general purposes. Cr. Fraser brought forward the condition of Soott's ferry, and, at the suggestion of the representative of the Manawatu County Council, recommended that tho ferry be closed, and "ijurfpunt and gear then handed over to ' .any person to work who would be willing to' do so. It was resolved, on the jrotion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Simpson, that this Council approve of the proposal made by the Manawatu •County Council. Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Sniitk, seconded by Cr. McGregor, that Mr. Balziell be informed that the Council .-considers thafe the 292 acres of his land the Makohine Village Settlement should be included within . the • special rating district, "particularly as tho ' metalling already done has beeii -out of "thirds" from the sections beyond. Report of the committee appointed to report on the road through Messrs. Baldwin and Westland's properties, ■through Turakina to the Wangaehu Uiver was read.' It was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Ci\ Aldworth, that Messrs. Baldwin and Westland be written to asking them on what terms they will agree to the road going through their properties as recommended by Crs. A. and E. McGregor in their report. A petition was received from Ohutu settlers for road connection from Puhurua road to Ufciku.—Matter referred to Mi\ Mair to report on. Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by Cr. Aldworth, that a subsidy of £1 for £1, up to £40, be .given towards the formation of the Pokaka road, as applied for by Messrs. .Morrison and Batley at last meeting. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. McGregor, that the action of the Works Committee in (accepting Mr. M. C. Doherty's tender for contract No. 191, MangamahoeMataroa road, be confirmed. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Aldworth, that the Chief Engineer of Roads be written to with reference to the bad state ■of the roads recently handed over by tho Department to tho Council, and that the Council will decline to accept any liability for roads handed over in a bad condition.

Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by the Chairman, that the inspector be authorised to havo the necessary fencing done on the road through the Makohine Railway Re•scJPve. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. A. McGregor, that tenders be invited for the additions to tho Council Chambers. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. McGregor, that tho inspector be authorised to allow Mr. Bartholomew to take some metal from tho Tailnape gravel reserve. Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by the Chairman, that a reply be sent to Mr. J. Iyess that the Council is unable to give him permission to erect the hoarding in Taihape as asked for. Accounts amounting to £1511 11s. 2d. wero passed for payment. Mr. Robert Wilson, of Heaton Park, waited on the Council to ask permission to allow a road to be made from the main road to give access to tlio back sections, as the estate is to be cut up, subdivided, and sold. It is proposed to rate the .settlers interested by thoir forming themselves into a special rating area to raise the loan to do tho work. Tho Trustees intend doing the formation work and tho Council' the metalling, under the supervision of Mr 1 horns.

Mr. Mail1 (inspector) reported that no reply has bee^ received yet from the Railway Department re the wages for the man who pumped the water for tho ballast train. He put this man on at the request of the stationmaster at Mangaweka. When it came to paying bin wages he (Mr. Ma it) was referred to tho' Traffic Manager, Wanganui, then to the District Engineer (Mr. McIntosh), then to the Locomotive Engineer, Pet-one, and from him to the Mechanical Engineer. "No doubt you will bear from him in the sweet by-and-bye." The amount due is about £10, which ha.'i been referred to the Minis' ter.
