Education Board.

The usual monthly meeting of the Education Board was held last evening. ■ present: Messi-3. G. S. Bridge (in the chair), F. Y. Lethbrjclgy. F. .Pirani, K. A. Adams. F. H. ilaselden, F. M. Spurdle and J. Dixon. ; Minutce.—The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Finance. —The cash statement, which was as follows, was laid on tho table.

Resignations.—The following resignations wer© accepted :—E. Tout (ITmutoi), S. E. McKellar (Westmere), J. M. Ferguson (Hunterville), Ivy Proudfoot (Manaia), A. H. Bremer (Kongotea), W. D. Kirkpatriek (relieving teacher)). Selections.—The Boa.rd agreed to the following selections:—Mr. J. Ritchie as assistant master at College street District High School; M»5 L. O. Mowbray as assrstamt at Normanby ; Miss F. Gohan, as assistant at Fitzherberfc Ecst; Miss Neilson, as mistress at Turakina ; J. W. Coombe, as fifth assistant at Campbell street. . Glen Nevis.—^Mr. D. Sarjeant waited on the Board in support of the petition from the settlers that the new school be erected on a sit© at the end of the bridle track. Mr. Franke, representing the settlers in favour of the school being erected on the /pr<i:ent site, aLso laid his plans before the Board. It was resolved that the matter of site be held over till next meeting raid that aoplication be made for a grant for a 60 school on the bridle track. In connection wi>th F. B. Maunders complaint re .salaries, it was resolved that if salary is not paid up to the end of the year the Board will consider the question of closing the school. Pohanui.—-Committee to be informed that, they have faikd to comply with the regulations re making up salary, and that if they do not make up the salary the Board will have to consider the question of closing the school. Kaponga. —Miss E. Henn appointed mistress. .

Unclaimed Grants.—The chairman stated (that several committees had not applied for grants made by the Board to them, and he moved that all grants made over six months ago and not operated upon lapse, and that committees be notified accordingly.

Unpaid Grants.—The Chairman pointed out that grants for the purchase of carpenter's tools and scientific apparatus in connection with district high schools had not yet been received from the Government. It was necessary that the apparatus named be obtained, but the •Chairman aaid he thought it was not safe to' buy anything until thei Department had given . a promise of a grant. "Mr. Gray'thought .the Government grant could safely be -atntici-pated, and on Mr. Pirani'.s motion,-it was re-solved.-that 'the secretary write to the Department asking whether the Board should order .the apparatus in anticipation of tho Government grant. .:■ Certificates. —On the suggestion of the Inspector and the motion of the Chairman it was decided that certificates in connootion with the work done by pupils at technical .schools be granted, and that they be presented publicly. : Mangaweka—Considerable correspondence dealing with trouble'between the headmaster, and assistant teacher of the Mangaweka school was.mid. It was resolved that Mr. Tompkins be informed that the Board expects him to treat his assistant with more'consideration; and thus avoid complaint^ in future. It wi'is also resolved that Miss Wallace be informed that while the Board considers she acted under great provocation, it expects her to show respect to her superior officer. Utiku.—Mr. Haselden's ■ report (recommending the erection of a school at tTtiiku) was adopted. Mokoia..—lt was resolved that Mr. Lysaght's offer of land for a school at Mokoia be accept<id; that he be asked .to.-increase, it to 2 acres, in order to accommodate the'horses'of.'pupils; and that the Department be asked for :i gramt to erect a 40-schcol at Mokoia. . Patea.—Mr. W, Adams'; request for copies of certain letters was acceded to. It was resolved that the Pa tea. school committee be informed that as it is likely that the dispute between Mr. Adams and the Rev. Hammond will be taken to the civil courts, the Board do not hold an inouiry in the meantime. ■ Hautapu.—Re teacher's residence. — Board has no funds for the purpose. Wangaehu.—Re new school. —Board has no funds for the purpose. Adjournment.—A.t. 10.10 Mr. Adams moved the adjournment of the meeting till 9.30 on following morning.—The motion was lost. College Street.—Matttß.' of putting drains in proper order referred to the Building Committee. Mangatoki.—Re alterations to residence. —No funds available.

Aramoho.—Copy of sanitary inspe/otor's report on teacher's residence to be forwardWd to the Department; that it bo -informed that the Board is of opinion the building is not worth repairing; and thai it be asked whether it will make a grant for the erection of a new building or grant house allowance. Grants.—Mr. Dixon moved. That application be made to the School Commissioners, Wellington for assistance to the following district high schools: — Palmerston, Feilding, Marton. Tlr.s was seconded by Mr. Adams. After discussion the motion was lost by 4 to 3.—On Mr. Pirani's motion, it was decided that the Taranaki School! Commissioners be asked for a grant for tlu; 'Taranaki High Schools under the jurisdiction of the Wanganui Education Board. School Examinations.—On the motion of Mr. Pirani, it was resolved, That the Minister for Education be informed that under the new regulations for I the examination of schools the Board will be put to an expense of about £40 a year for advertising the annual visits of the inspector of .primary schools, and he ibo asked whether it is proposed to increase the capitation paid to the Board [ to meet such extra expenditure.

BUILDING REPORT

The Buiilding Coramittoe's reports as follows, was read and adopted: — Te Roti.—Painting lield over. Glazing windows and 'repairs to spouting committee's work.

Marton. —Painting held over. Pohangina.— -£2 16s. granted for fence. 600-gallon ta.nk supplied, architect instruoted to add one room to residence. Board does not provide trap sheds. Taonui. —Architect instructed to add additional room to residence.

Okiawa. —No funds for inside painting. KeK-in Grove.—Committee informed that the Board's former o&or with regard to draining and gravelling is oti.l open. Furniture supplied -to Long Acre:. Altton, Riverlie, College Street, Marton, Hawera. Mount Vie^% Ruahine, Pohangma, Wangauui Boys' "Waitotara.

Alton.—£2 granted'for rent of hall used during additions. Marton.—ln the interests of morality, doors are not provided to closets. Patea. —Parker's tender for repairs to school accepted. Manutahi.—£s 17s. 6d. granted tor epouting, etc. Grubbing goree and repairing fences committee's work. Rongotea;—Cannot increase former grant for'papering. Apiti.—•Necessity for repaire to residence should have been pointed out to inspector. Kohi.—£7 10s. 6d. granted for spouting and down piping. Sandcn.— 7? chains fencing at 21s. to '2Js. granted. Ngama'tipouri.—£s ss. granted ror painting Taumatahi school. Brunswick.—Not exceeding £4 granted for repairs >to school. Hurleyville. No funds for addition to porch. Curtains will be' supplied. Kawhatau.—No funds for well. Mar's Hill.—Kuth's tender of £5 2s. 9d. for purchase of old building accepted. ' , , Hunterville.—Painting will be considered with painting of other schools. Raetihi.—A.
