A COSTLY IDOL.
A lady from the country entered a bric-a-brac shop its town, and, looking about, noticed a quaint figure, the head a<nd shoulders of which appjeaxed above the counter. "What is that Japanese idol over there worth?" she inquired. The shopman's reply was in a subdued tone. "Aoout twenty thousand pounds, madame; it's the proprietor."
