THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
To the Editor.
Sir,—ln you*' issue of thra imorning there Sa a short article about the shocking state of immorality,, amongst, the young people, of Sydney. As there is a furtherl movement in the matter of Bible in schools now being made, does it not become people to hesitate /before interfering in our present eplendM secular isystemi of education? Everyone should understand that the educational system of New- South Wales embraces Bible teaching in the public schools, and if the outcome <is as the article above-mentioned, that appearadl this morning, it seems thlat the question is not whether the Bible being taught in the public schools is good, but whether it is not positively pernicious? The morals of the people of New1 Zealand compare very favourably with those countries tUat have the Bible 2n sohools. Taking into consideration the bad effect of introducing Bible teaching onto our technical system must! have, independent of the question of morals and tha very, doubtful prospeqb of its doing iany good in the moral aspeat, it behovas ■•fchet public *o be veiy ca»efui what thei' do jußfl at this junoture. Only very .p----oently there was an article in your valuable .journal concerninig the direadful sta:* of superstition, that/ exists in Hungary. where the inhabitants would! not allow of a corpse being, taken through their village for fear of bad luck. Nobodx can say that these people .dSk! not get Bible learainjr, for the people of Catholic countries get saturated with it, and very little else. My prophecQ/1 is tihat before two years afl<?r they get it, the very parties who are now a^tatsng for it will be the most dissu"- =.fied, nttath its" effect.—-I- am, eito., MANUW-4J.
fWa invite "Manuwai" to sign vis own !name to any further contributions on this subject. We feel sure that has ci» sties ■would ba mione widely and accurately ap>precfated ware he to do so.—Ed. "Onron- ■■" .
