Rowing Notes.

BY "SWIVEL."

The Trial Pains have been absorbingthe interest of the members of the W.R.C. during the past two •weeks*. I do not- notice many of the senior men at wo-ik. Competition for a seat in the representative foiu^s has no doubt -a^Qgad deal to dci with this, as I notice several different combinations being tried, with a view of finding" cut the crew most suited to represent the club in thg.race for championship honou'-s. I should Tike to sec the "local c:ub represented in the other champion events, but so far I have not seen any best and best I pair oar or double scu'ling bents on the { river. I hear that a movement is oh foot amongst the members and supporters of the U.B.C. to procure a* suitable boat for Webb to represent the club in in the champion sculls. I really hope, they will leave no 'Stone unturned, to bciat him so that he will have a fair chance to exhibit his powers as a sculler, as his performance last year at the local regatta fully demonstrated that should he perform in a skiff as he does in a clinker practice sculler, he will give a good account of himself on regatta, day. Reverting to the W.R.C. paiirs, Cathro and Mackay opened the bal> by defeatr | ing Ashton and McDonald by a, bare quarter of a length, after a good struggle, bow in the latter crew disposing of whatever chance his crew had by catching a bad "crab" in the last few strokes. On the same evening Duff and Till roved Slipper and Marshall, • which proved the best otf good things for the latter crew. On Thursday, Ward and Nbrthcroft rather easily disposed' of Layers and Bell. Day and McDonald had all the best of a dull race with Gibbons and Mountfort. In the second round on Friday, Ward and! Novthcroft and Cathro and Mackay fought it out on the lower course, the former making the bridge a couple of lengths to the good. The final on Saturday afternoon proved the best nice in the competition,. 'Ward and Northcroft defeating Slipper and Marshall by about) a quarter of a length, after a race which certainly looked like a win for the latter crew until a. timely spurt by their opponent's landed them past the judge with a very sTig-ht advantage. The winnew well deserve their success., for of all the crews in these races none were more consistently on the track than they, and some of their opponents might well remember that v crew requires more than two or three _raws a week to Jmj in a position to compete with those who. pay duily attention to their task.

Bailey beat Kbbson by about a. length last night; Anderson beat Bailey. Tonight Dymock I'otw.s Tillev, and to-morrow night the winner 'rows Anderson in the final.

The following .strokes are requested to be ati the shed's at 5 o'clock to select their crews for the Fit/Jierbert Fours (finst heat to be rowed on Saturday, 20th instant) —• Day, Dymock, Till, Delves, Tilley, Johns, Kerf, and Wright,
