THE NAVY ESTIMATES

A LARGE INCREASE.

The Navy estimates for the year 1901----1902 provide for an expenditure of £30,----875,000, an increase of £2,083,000 on the previous year. Nine millions will be devoted to the work of construction, the following additions tn\v.sr, proposed:—Thna battleships, six armoured eruissrs, two third-class cruisers, ten torpedo boat destroyers, five torpedo boats, and five submarine boats of the Holland type. The finest vessels of nearly all the great steamskip companies 411-0 held at the disposition of the Admiralty as cruisers, and 18 of the largest and swiftest have been sub-vention-ed by the Government.

In connection with the Navy Estimates, the output of armour during the past year has increased fifty 'per cent. With the exception of two battleships and one armoured cruiser all the new vessels* ■will be built privately.

The committee of experts appointed by Mr Goschen in July last to inquire into the efficiency of the Belleville bailers on warships, has presented an interim report, and recommends the use in future of some type of water tube boiler other than the lSelevillc, but the Belleville boilers already fitted in the vessels may remain.
