RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL

MAR-TON, Saturday. ' The ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place this morning.

Present—Mr J. W. Marshall (chairman) and Crs Holden, Simpson, Beckett, Aidworth, McGregor and Dulrymple. Inward corresponclfe-nce was read and dealt with as follows :

Letters from E. O. Hurley, forwarding notices of attachment under the Workman's Wages Act" against moneys due to F. Carmody. Left in the chairman's hands.

G. Barry, roadman, tendering hi,s resignation as surfaceman. Resolved by Cr Beckett that the Inspector be empowered to -employ a man at 6s 6d per day. A. Curtin, roadman, re his claim for extra- consideration in connection with his road maintenance contract. The Council took no action.

From same.—The question of claiming £500 damages from the; clerk for defamation of character contained in a letter written to him was referred to- the Finance Committee.

Jas. Me Alley, application for slaughtering license on section 4, Block IX., Ohinewairua District. Referred to Insjiectur of Slaughterhouses tc report, subject to applicant complying with the Act re advertising.

Wm. Snell, application for .transfer of slaughtering license to H. V. Pickering. Transfer granted. C. R. Campbell and R. Healy, roadmen, applying for increase of wages. Cr Holden moved that the applications be grunted, which was ■■arried.

A. It. Mackay, C.E., forwarding Turakina Bridge plans only. Resolved that the Council insist on the whole of the plans belonging to them being returned, and that the chairman be empowered to take such action as he thinks necessary to recover them.

A. Burgess, advising that he has a 6-h.p. traction engine for sale. Council decided to do nothing at present.

Robert Jones, applying for a slaughtering license. Matter referred to the Inspector. John Duthie and Co., re stone-breaking machine.

Mrs E. Willis, claiming £10 compensation re_ deviation of water course. As the property is improved by the alteration made, the Council decided that the amount asked for was excessive, but thinks that £1 as recognition of right of 0.-rfmer-ship is sufficient. Railway Engineer, re road through Marton Station. Council has no objection to any arrangement the Department may make with Mr Bagge, if no liability is placed on the local body. W. T. Galpln, drawing Council's attention to state of Ngaruru Road. Referred to Inspector to havo road put in order before winter. Council regrets no funds available for metalling. R Lyon, contractor, rcKapapapa Bridge contract. Cheque passed for £10 as progress payment. C. G.! Esam, solicitor, re the attachment orders r.gainst moneys duo on Carmody's contract. Matter left in the chairman's hands to deal with.

The engineer's (Mr Mair) report- was read, stating that the suspension rods for the Kapapapa Bridge have been lengthened as required. Mr Sangster, contractor for erection Vinegar Hill Bridge, is making good progress ; the heightening cylinders are all in position, securely bolted and rivettod, and are being filled.with concrete. His estimate for raising a loan for Taihapo street improvements is £1730 15s. Two and a half miles of road have been surveyed, and plans are now in hand. - He recommends that Mr Thompson, contractor for nightsoil removal, be paid £4 per month from Apri"! Ist next for burying soil, etc. The new bye-laws will then be in force, and assist him in lieu of the payment of Is per hour. The approaches to the Kapapapa Bridge should be put in hand at once, as the bridge is of no- use until that .is done. The Inspector's (Mr Thorns) report was dealt with, stating that the cost of topping and metalling pait of bridle track (180 chains) is £540. He recommends that Mr Thurston.bc appointed roadman at 6s 6d per day for the Bulls and Crofton Roads. He has ordered 3200 feet of timber from Messrs Wright and Carter and Mr Wilson (Hunterville). The cost of excavating and metalling road and lower .cutting near radlwajy crossing at Bonny Glen to give a grade of 1 in 13 is £25 17s. Several owners of properties have been given notice to clear gorse gi'owing on the road fronting their places. The recommendations asked for were agreed to. ' .

Resolved thut the Mayor of Wellington be asked to forward further subscription lists to collect moneys for the erection of a memorial of our'late Queen, and that they bo left at the townships in the County ; also that this Council will assist the movement to the best of its power.

That • a plan of that portion of Ohaumoko Road lying within the Okirae lilock be forwarded to Mr P. .C. Nei'll for his signature in terms of his letter of 31st May, 1899.

The receipts for tolls of Bulls Bridge for the past four weeks amounted to £31 Is 4d.

That application be made to the Govsrnmenfc for a loan of £550 for 40 years for metalling, etc., 21 miles bridle track. A special rate of 2-sths of Id to cover cost. Tlib Bulls toll-keeper was instructed to proceed against persons driving vehicles over the bridge at other than a walk, including ladies. Tenders were accepted as follows:—No. 25, 320 yds gravel, Mount Curl Road, Mr Findlay; No. 27, sanding, gravel, repairs, Murimotu Road, Mr Gustaffson; No. 26, 100 cubic yards gravel, Ongo Road, no tender.
