The Engineers repairing the Lydenburg telegraph line were attacked by the Boers on the Crocodile River, and returned to camp, but 19 Hussars, escorting their convoy, aro missing. Lord Roberts reports that he heard Botha had temporarily resigned chief command owing to ill-health. German newspapers commend Lord Roberts' humane warning to the Boers. Details of General French's capture at Barberton show that he crossed the mountains and surprised the town, intercepting large convoys. The bulk of his force was 35 miles behind the cavalry, owing to the difficulty of bringing waggons over the mountain pass*. Owing to the annexation of tfce Transvaal the Portuguese Government refuses to recognise Pott, former representative for the Traifsvaal at Delagoa. The Governor has received the following cablegram from the General of Communications, Capetown, September 16 : —The Wakauui left Capetown on the 11th of September, and has on board the following invalids of the New Zealand Contingents for Wellington :— Troopers Woodley, Cobat, Londen, Fraser/ Willis, Glnrke, Templeton, >Cuhitt, and Farrier Wallace ; for Lyttelton, Gunner Colhorn ; for Auckland, LanceCorporal Williams. AUCKLAND, September 17. The invalided troopers who arrived from Afriua by the s.s. Whukatane left for the South by the s.s. Takapuiia. Trooper Currie remained behind.
