> _- / Two members of Gerlache's expedition have died. Presiding at a meeting of the Club, at London, Mr. Tozer, Agent-Gene-ral for Queensland, contended that the sugar bounties were closing the British mar- 1 kets to the sugar-nroducing colonies. British consumers paid twenty millions to the bounty powers at the expense of the British cblonies, and the ultimate result would be the ruin, of the colonial sugar industry. The American visible supply of wheat is estimated at 51,238,000 bushels. - Lord George Hamilton has a letter in the Press dealing with the memorials recently presented by the English Church Union to the Qaeen and Parliament, affirming that the Churcn should remain independent of Parliament and the Courts in the matter ofdoctrine, ceremonial, and the utterahees of Lord Halifax, president of the Union. On the subject he denounces Lord Halifax's defiance, of constituted authority, and 'says the High Churchmen ought to repudiate the rebellion against authority. Obituary : Miss Rose Leolercq, at one time ii prominent actress ; Wylie, the draughts champion. The Egyptian Government has under consideration the extension of the Soudan Railway through Khartoum, via Kassala to Suakim. The Eiffel Tower at Paris will shortly be utilised in conducting wireless telegraphic experiments with the South Foreland. The N.S.W. Cabinet has discussed the appointments to the Council. The batcn selected was submitted to the Lieut.-Go-vernor and kept secret until Gazetted yesterday. It is reported that another cruiser will shortly be sent to Samoa. Francis .Druce, the South Australian claimant to the Portland title and estates, has sailed for England. The solicitor who has his case in hand left for London some time ago, and will there co-operate with a wellknown firm of solicitors. Druce claims that T. C. Druce died without legitimate male issue, and that he is the nearest mule descendant.
