FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
INFLUENTIAL MEIOTING.
A meeting of Nelson Bros,' (Limited) contractors met in th? long room of Ohavannes' Hotel yesterday nfternoou to discuss tho frozen meat question.
Mr E. A. Campbell was voted to the chair on the motion of Mr Edward Newman (Turakiua), seconded by Mr U. .'■. Lomax (Uorahan),
The meeting we noticsd was largely representative nf leading settlors from Hawpra to Eangitikoi and I .a sutrcunding districts, the room being crowdud. The Chairman in a fow words explained the object of the meeting, and introduced Mr Nelson, who, to said, would oxpJnin the position.
Mr Willtain Nelson dealt at some length upon the various aspoefs of the frozen meat trade, and the unsatisfactory position into which the trade had drifted, and showing how largely our Australian neighbours as well us other countries are entering into competition with cur pioducts, producing glutted markets and ruinous price 3. Mr Nolson compared the price? at Home na agiinst those locally, and impressed noon those present that the only way to remedy the evil was to improve the standard of ir.oit sripped. Tho market at Uorae and shipments afloat were exceptionally h9avy, and unles3 something was dons to grapple with the difficulty at onco tin matter would becomo vory serkus; with this object Mr Nokon pointed out the i absolute necessity of elnngo of conditions on which tin trade for the fu'ure must be carried on, involving a reduction of the colonial price aud restriction on the quality of maat shipped.
After considerable disuusion and several qnestions boing put and satisfactorily answered (tho meeting l)9ing in thorough sympathy with Mr Nelson's views), Mr John Peat moved, "That Messrs Nolsan Bros.' amended terms to accepted." This was seconded by Mr George Mitchell and carriod unanimously. Mr E. B. Hamilton (Manutahi) thought that the thanks of tho meeting were due to Mr Nolson for the way in which he had explained matters, aud he had much pleasure in moving that a hearty vote of thanks be accprded to Mr Nejson for llj 9 straightforward and manly way in which ho bid nnt the contractors and put the biuine3s b9fore them. Mr Thomas Holdon (Huntervillo) sqeonded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. Those present signed the atimdetf contract, and tho business terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair, I
