The weather was splendid, and there must have been fully 809 people 1 present, who hied from town by 'bus, brake, and steamer. From a sporting point of view most of the events were Blow the horsea evidently baing in want training, but notwithstanding this draw- ■ back some £700 was pis-ed through the ' totalistor, which was under the oare of 1 Mr G. Spriggens. Mr Couchman, the > secretary, was the right man ill the ' ' right place, and carried out his duties to the satisfaction of everybody. The j officers and stewards of the Olub were ' fully alive to their responsibilities, and j carried ont their work in a bnriness-like 1 manner. Mr Dnstia provided a firstolass lunch and g-netal refreshments in a large marquee, and was, it is needless. to say, well patronised, aa a caterer of acknowledged standing should be. His arrangements were excellent and not- ' withstanding the drawback of a dusty ' day, managed to please everybody. ' Mr . ' A. B. P. Pyemont, representing Mrs J. > Harle, did good business in the liquids department, and also gave satijfU^ion, A first-class band, under Mr Armstrong, L discoursed pleasant music daring the * afternoon, and helped to enliven the 1 proceedings. Entering the straight for the second time Wilkie, who was driving Topsy 11., reI duced the distance' between him and ' Apiti, but to no purpose, the latter win- ■ ning easily. Luhra, and Niagara being next in order for the first quarter of a mile. At the „a top of the couise Lubra ovortook Topsy, 1 I- and made a good attempt to head Jib, ' 2 but Topsy, not to be donied, came with a ! spurt and re-instated herself in second ' place, and succeeded in decreasing her distance from Jib, who was still leading: Passing the stand the second time, Jib broke and allowed Top3v to gain still further ground. At the last half-mile . Topay put on a spurt and overtook Jib in : the straight, eventually wiuning by about 3 four lengths from Jib, Jack Sprat being a r bad third, and tbe rest nowhere. Grenadier L and Plug ware in close attendance up the straight, but when JJ2Ss> D R the judge's box the first tiraOT*he Grey broke and allowed Grenadier to got the 1 lead. Grenadier maintained his lead, ! with The Grey close at hia heels, and , won by a couple of lengths, The Plug , being third. The rest of the field were , stragglers. Time, Bm. 19aecs. Jib again got away firat, closely followed by aileon and Lubra, The Grey being a bad fonrth to the straight, where, coming up, be pressed Jib for pride of place, eventually succeeding* in getting the lead at the fop of the course. The Grey managed to retain tbe lead, and won by three lengths ahead of Jib, Bover 11. being A good third. Time, sms 29aecs. Dividsnd, £2 12s. Totalisator. £66. Post Stakes (in Saddle), of 15 soys second horse to receive 5 boys from the stakes. For horses that have not been nominated fcrany event at time of starting at any Trotting Meeting. Distance. 1 mile. Dandy Dick 1 I Barmaid 2 I Polly 3 9 There were thirteen starters in this I race, and a good deal of interest centred I therein, it being rumoured that there fl were some " dark " horsea in it. From B a good start Dandy Dick took tbe lead, fl with Barmaid in close attendance, and B the race was between these two all the > fH way. At the first quarter-mile post T| Dandy Dick broke, and allowed Barmaid fl to take command, but she, in her turn, fl broke; and Dandy Dick, again getting fl ahead, won by about five lengths, Polly B being third, and the rest much scattered. fl Time, 3m 20secs. A protest was entered fl against Dandy Dick and Barmaid, on the fl grounds that they had started in.a race H at Pnlmerston.
