Wellington, Match 22, In Wellington suburbs the licensing election returns are not yet complete, but it is almost certain that the Temperance Committee will be elected. Local option so far is for continuance. Publicans' licenses, 486 j reduction, 143,- no license, 572 Six returns yet to come. It is understood that Otaki has returned Moderate candidates, but there are no details. Auckland, March 22. At the licensing election in the Eden electorate 450 votes were reoorded out of 8937 on the roll, the election is therefore void. Pew women vcted. The weather was unfavaurable. Napier, March 22. More than half the electors voted yesterday in the election of the licensing committee, but many refused the papers*"*-: for the local option poll, or brought them away in their pocket 3 ; 1849 voted, 128 being in favour no reduction of licenses, 298 for reduction, and 341 for prohibition ; 1082 informal. The large number of informal votes is accounted for by the fact that those who'were in favour of the maintenance of the present number of licenses were publicly asked not to mark their ballot papers so as to prevent a half poll. The Hawke's Bay poll is not complete, but the Moderate candidate is sure of election ; the poll will certainly be void. The Bame result is expected at Waipawa. Dunedin, March 22. The complete returns for Waihemo are not to band. The return of the Temperance Committee is certain. Returns show 859 votes cast for prohibition, 121 for reduction, and 241 for licenses remaining. The number required to make the poll effective iB 1501. It is believed that prohibition will be carried without doubt. Latjbr. The City vote is effective under local option by a larpe majority, 7482 valid votes being cast. The returning officer declared 4470 cast for prohibition. If eighteen more votes had been polled prohibition would have been carried. The figures were— for continuance, 1359; reduction, 2479 ; prohibition, 3903; bottle continuance, 1411; reduction, 1827} no license, 4470. Latest. The following are the results of the local option poll :— Publicans' licenses continue existing licenses, 1359; reduction, 2479 ; no licensos, 3903 ; accommodation licenses continuance, 1466; reduction, 2182 j no license, 4035 ; bottle licenses continuance, 1411; reduction, 1827 ; no licenses, 4470 ; informal votes, 1922. On making the formal declaration the representatives of both parties demanded a scrutiny. The returning officer said that X2OO would have to be deposited. It is not yet known whether the matter will bo proceeded with further. The number short of carrying prohibition for publicans' licenses would seem to be 741, and of bottle licenses 155, The latter the returning officer makes out to be only 18. The Caveraham local option poll is •— Publicans' licenses continuance, 357; reduction, 431 ; no licenses, 912 ; bottle licenses continuance ,381 ; reduction, 310; no licenses, 1001. There were altogether 305 informal votes. The poll is 108 short if prohibition for publicans, and 19 short » for bottle licenses. •♦» Mastebton, March 22. With five small returns to come in the position of the Masterton candidates is— Dawson, 902; Hersey, 886; Stewart, 883 ; Chamberlain, 843 ; Walker, 842 ; Sheatb, 802; Bright, 765; Syverson, • 702; Von Bidder, 553 (all Moderates); Daniells, 755; Vile, 682 (Independent); Pragnell (Prohibitionist), 021. The local option poll is almost csrtain to be null. Fort Chalmers, March 22. Port Chalmers local option :—Publicans' continuation, 659 ; reduction, 383 ; no licenses, 1272 ; bottle license continuation, 566; reduction, 332; no licenses, 1371. The poll is effective but it is 57 short of prohibition in publicans'. Bottle licenses are prohibited by a majority of 178.
