RAILWAY CARRIAGE ACCOMMODATION.
• . ' . 10 THE EDITOR. ; Sin; — I have waited long and patiently, for" some other fellow " to write re the following, but seeing that no one does I venture to air what I, and many others, consider a pie :e of characteristic ■* cheek "■ on the part of. the Railway Departmont^ I am a passenger every Saturday on the Wanganui-Ifew Plymouth line, aud on no Saturday for the last six weeks has the accommodation been sufficient. I am speaking particularly of the first class : of the second I know nothing — it may, or may not be ample. Ihis, however, Ido know : That, for the last four Saturdays at least, the first class carriages have been so overcrowded 33 to render it necpssary for the poor " malo outsiders" to stand on. the platform in the cold night air and subject to fhe soot, du3t, &c, which are always flying about. On asking the guard, that functionary looks pityingly at you and suggests that some .of the lady passengers " may " get off ' f somowhoro"in which case you " may " get a seat. Last Saturday three'gentle.mon were forced to stand on the platform 'between Wanganui and Waverley. Others, to whonj it was very objectionable, were forced to take shelter in the murky atmosphere of the smoking carriage j even that, until we passed KaiI wi, being overcrowded. Complaints are loud an<l frfequent. I submit .to the public that, having paid an exorbitant fare, wo are at least entitled to sitting room, and tlia_t it is a piece of unparalleled impertinence to ask passengers to stand. I hope that others will " say their saj " on the matter, and, if necessary, compal the authorities to. supply decent room; even- if they have to carry fewer sheep or other luggage. Allow me to apoligiso for this long trespass on your space, but the grjovauce is a real one and needs the publicity of a widely circulated paper. — I am, &c, Saturday Tbavellke.
