NAVAL AND MILITARY SETTLERS LAND ACT. [Peb United Pbess ' Association^ • Wellington, October 1. The Naval and Military Settlors and Volunteers Land Act is about to be given effect to and orders have been issued by the Minister for Defence to have the scrip prepared. The Minister of Lands is making arrangements to have the necessary blocks of land surveyed and laid off with a view to give effect to the Loans to Local Bodies Act Amendment Act. The Minister of Lands has ordered a report to be preparedby the officers in the various districts, as to the suitability of the land in each district. The Hon. Mr McKenzie leaves for Christchurch to-morrow, where he spends a day or two and then goes on to Paltnerston South. An inquest will be held on Friday at Palmerston North into the circumstances surrounding the recent disastrous fire there. The Land Board to-day empowered the Commissioner of Lands to take any steps he considers necessaty to obtain the opinion of a Supreme Court Judge as to the improvements required to be effected by selectoi'S in terms of clause 16 of the "Land Act, 1887," Phillip Meuuell, special correspondent of the London Da'ly Chronicle, who is collecting material for a book on Australia, arrived here from Sydney to-day. Ihe Hauroto brought 60 passengers from 'Sydney. Mr Stead's horses— Medallion, Lebel, and Palliser — passed through "Wellington to-day en route to Christchurch from Sydney, The Minister for Public Works states that the Te Aro railway extension will be carried out immediately the plans are prepared. Dr Guy Porter is gazetted as surgeon to Her Majesty's Prison at Milford Sound for six months. Dr Porter left for Milford Sound in the Hinenioa to-day.
