THE CHILIAN REVOLT.
[Bt Electeic Teleobaph — Coptbight.] VALPARAISO THREATENED WITH BOMBARDMENT. [Peb Pbess Association^! Valpabaiso, May 30. Chilian ladies are selling their jewellery in order to raise money with which to purchase arms for the insurgents. The United States cruiser Charleston has arrived at. the Peruvian port of Callao, Her officers report they have failed to find any trace of the rebel steamer Itata. It is believed that the Mexican authorities were frightened by the presence of the Chilian insurgent warehip Esmeralda in the port of Auapulco, and thus permitted her to coal. . The insurgents threaten' to bombard Valparaiso, but it is expected the United States, Great Britian, and other Powers will step in to prevent it. New Yobk, May 30. The United States Government has abandoned the chase of the steamer Itata. The following description of the Itata and the war vessels- mentioned in connection with her escape from San Diego may prove of interest to our readers : — The Itata' is a Liverpool-built iron steamer of the merchantman class. In size she is scarcely so large as the steamer Te Anau, and in speed she does not exceed 11 knots per hour. The owners are merchants in Valparaiso, According to cable news, she was pursued by the American warships Omaha and Charleston. The former of these fighting ships is an old wooden corvette — a very different stamp of vessel to the Charleston. The latter is a twin-screw steel-built fast cruiser, launched about' two years since at San Francisco and armed with two ,Bin and six 6in breachloading heavy guns. This powerfully armed ship has a speed of nearly 18 knots per hour. Should the Charleston have come into conflict with the Esmeralda (tho cruiser sent out to protect the Itata) at Acapulco, the Chilian warship, though smaller than the Charletson, is equally fast, and carries a heavier' armament. Her heaviest weapons are two 23-ton Gin guns, in addition to 'vlnch she is armed with the.number of 6in guns as the Charleston. • Like the Charleston also, the Esmeralda is built of steel, and is well protect iv her vital parts.' She was built at Newcastlo-on-Tyne for the Chilian Government eight years ago.
