(per united press association.) Auckland, February 18. There was a great fight over the licensing elections in the city wards today between the moderate ticket and the temperance ticket- The North Ward elected four temperance and one moderate, the South Ward three mode' rates and two temperance, and the East Ward ia the same as the South. The Gfrafton vVard candidates are all on the temperance ticket. The result is considered a victory for the moderate ticket, as the contest was really in the South, East, and North Wards. February 19. Owing to an informality in spelling the name of one of the temperance candidates, and which was not discovered till about noou, it is likely thare will be a fresh contest in City South, where the moderates gained the day by three men to two temperance men. The first licensing committee election for the city took place to-day, resulting ia the complete defeat of the temperance candidates, the old committee being returned by a majority of nearly 3 to 1. The temperanoe party made a demonstration to-night, paiading the streets with torches, bands, and banners, and finishing up with a mass meeting at the Theatre Boyal.
