WELLINGTON.
February 13. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this afternoon a young man named Frank McDowell was committed for trial, on a charge of: embezzling the sum of £94. The money, it is alleged, belonged to Jam9s McDowell, clothier, February 14. The boy drowned in the harbour yesterday was not Watson aa at first telegraphed, bul is now identified as the son of Mr 8. S, Griffiths, a oomi mercial traveller. Great interest is taken in the licensing question, and yesterday there were large nominations for three out of the four wards. For Te Aro and Cook's Wards there were ten namin<itions, for Lainbton nine nominations, and for j Thorndon six. The temperance party are holding lectures in favour of their cause. At the theatre this afternoon there was a large -attendanco at the temperance lecture, Sir William Fox presiding. Mr Glover, who has been engaged by the Temperance Alliance, made a strong appeal to the audience to return temperance candidates, A.t a meeting of the locai Rifle Association yesterday, the President's Oup, for the highest aggregate in four matches, was won by Corporal Kuchen, of the Wellington Artillery. The 'ten highest aggregates in the four matches will next week fire a final m *t«h for the chaaipion belt. The Artillery have saven men out of the 10 qualified.
