SPORTING. LOWER HEATHCOTE R.C. TROTTING MEETING.
(pee united press association) Christchurch, February 11, In connection with the Lower Heath* cote Racing Club, the first meeting devoted exclusively to trotting ever held in Canterbury took place to-day. The weather was fine, and about 600 persons were present. About £1500 was put through the totalisators during the day. The meeting was marred by protests, and some acoidents occurred . in the Pony Harness Trot. Two of the ponies got rid of their drivers and ran a muck round the course amongst all the other horses. One of the ponies capsized his sulky three times, and then lumped on another sulky and smashed it. Maiden Trot, of MO ; 3 miles. Mr Patton's Conger ... ... 1 Won easily, but protested against, $o decision has yet been arrived at. Pony Saddle Trot, of £20 ; 2 miles. Mr Kirkwood's Our Pony 1 Open Saddle Trot, of 45 sovs ; 3 miles. Conger ... 1 This was a good race, and Conger was again protested against for break* ing, but tbe judges were unable to come to a deoision. Eighteen started in the race. The Dunedin horses Oliver and Randall were nowhere. Pony Harness Trot ; 2 miles. Bloxwich 1 Dot 2 Our Pony ... ... 3 The latter would probably have won ! had he not been interfered with by those ponies who got away from their drivers. The Open Harness Trot of 40 sovs fell to Ernana, and the Consolation to Energy.
