REFUSED NEW TRIAL

JOHN WOOLCOTT FORBES. I (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 23. John Woolcott Forbes, who was convicted on nine charges in connection with transactions in share certificates, was today refused a new trial by the State Full Court. The grounds of the application were (1) that the indictment was bad because it was filed by the Crown Prosecutor and. not by the Attorney-General; (2) that the evidence of Forbes’s convictions in America had oeen wrongly admitted; and (3) that in view of a juror's statement that he had been offered a bribe, a new trial should be granted. “If a new trial were granted as a right simply because a juryman said he had been offered a bribe, it would mean that no rogue with sufficient money or sufficient influence need ever allow himself to be convicted,” said the Chief Justice, Sir Frederick Jordan. The Chief Justice added that there was no suggestion in this case that the juryman was influenced by the offer- of a bribe or that Forbes had been responsible fox- offering it.
