POSITIONS WITHIN HITLER LINE ACCORDING TO ALGIERS RADIO RESISTANCE FADING UNDER - ' ALLIED BLOWS (By Telegraph--Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, May 22. “The Germans are abandoning positions within the Hitler Line fortifications to escape annihilation,” says the Algiers radio, quoting an official source. “Pontecorvo . is completely encircled and enemy resistance is fading in face of the Fifth Army’s unrelenting blows against the southern flank of the Liri Valley defences.” A British United Press correspondent at Allied Headquarters reports that the whole of the Aurunci Mountains have been cleared of the enemy.- Well over 6,000 prisoners have been counted since the offensive opened. The Fre-nch have captured Monte Leucio, three miles west of Pontecorvo, puling the Allies three miles inside the Hitler Line, which is also threatened by the capture of high ground north-west of Pico and by the entry of Allied troops into the outskirts of Pontecorvo. The Allies, in addition, have captured a feature three miles north-west of Fondi, and Monte Marrone, one mile west of Pontecorvo and have cut the Pontecorvo-Pico Road, thus outflanking the enemy defences in the Liri Valley.
