P. & A. SOCIETY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr O. A. Cadwallader presided on Saturday over a meeting of the newly elected general committee, thirty-eight of whom were in attendance. The chairman stated that word had been received that Mr and Mrs Harold Deller’s son had been wounded in Italy. A letter of sympathy is to be forwarded to Mr and Mrs Deller. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £473 9s 9d. The president extended a hearty welcome to the new members of the committee. Mr E. T. Bliss returned thanks on behalf of Messrs G. H. Blundell, Bruce Donald, Colin Harvey, J. Hicks, M. G. Hobson, J. M. Jury, Junr., Ivan McLeod and R. O. Rayner. Mr T. Ryan offered to cut scrub for the jumps at the show, and his offer was accepted with thanks. J. L. Upritchard asked for permission to use the tea room on the showgrounds for a boxing school. The request was left to the ground committee to go into and report to the next committee meeting. Two new members were elected and one resignation received. In recognition of the services rendered to the Society over a long period of years, Mr W. A. Pyke was elected a life member. The matter of a caretaker for the showgrounds was left to the grounds committee. Now that only one football ground is in use on the showgrounds, it was resolved to call for tenders for grazing rights for sheen from June 1 to August. 1. It was resolved that deputy marshal stewards be appointed to all show com? mittees. Magistrate’s Court Sitting. The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court will be held on Wednesday afternoon. Back tp School. After the term holiday, schools in the district reopened this morning. '■ Meeting at Clareville. The meeting of the public of Clareville called for the purpose of dealing with Hall matters was attended by 13 residents. After the chairman had explained the reason for calling the meeting a committee consisting of Messrs. K_ Reid, L. Humphries, B. McKenzie, A. Stretton, C. Lyster, A. Dakin, A. Scott, S. Fisher and H. Abbott, with l power to add, was set up. The new committee elected Mr. K. H. Reid chairman and Mr. A. Stretton secretary. It was decided to hold a card tourney over the next three months, the first to be held on June 3, and that prizes be given at the close of the tornaments. Mrs. Rogers is to be engaged to supply the music and the prizes are to be to the value of 5s and, 2s 6d. The new committee will take over the functions of the Patriotic Committee and all accounts are now to be sent to the secretary, Mr A. Stretton. Successful Dance. A successful dance was held by the Carterton Citizens’ Entertainment Committee in the State Theatre on Saturday night. Udy’s Orchestra supplied the music and extras were played by Miss Beryl James and Messrs. Boyd and Udy. A Lucky Spot waltz was won by Miss Jordan and Mr. Rewi. The M.'sC. were Messrs. P. L. Beere and C. Tinsley. The supper arrangements under the supervision of the Catholic Ladies’ Committee, were excellent. Card Party. A card party was held on Saturday night in premises lately occupied by Mr W. M. Worsfold. The proceeds will g'o toward the funds of the Cubs. Prizes were won as follow: Ladies, Mrs Clayton 1, Mrs. Paterson 2; men, Mr Stafford 1, Mr. Paterson 2. Gathering at Dalefield. Dalefield and district residents will tomorrow night tender a social gathering to Pte. J. Conwell, who ’is on leave. Music for the dance will be supplied by Udy’s Orchestra. REGENT THEATRE “HATTER’S CASTLE.” Finally there will be shown tonight the outstanding drama. “Hatter's Castle,” written by the famous author, A. ■ J. Cronin, and telling a most vivid story.
