WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

.O. — MEETING AT GLADSTONE. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Cooper presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Gladstone Womens Institute held in the Gladstone Hall recently. The president welcomed Miss Wolters and Mrs Peacock of the executive committee, who gave interesting talks on Institute affairs. A letter was received acknowledging a parcel sent to the Pacific. Nominations for the new committee were received.

The roll call, “Suggestions for the 1944 Programme” was well answered and some very, helpful ideas given.

'The competitions resulted as follows: —Best collection of six distinct vegetables: Mrs Smith, 1; Mrs McKay, 2. Best bloom: Mrs Riddell, 1; Mrs Smith, 2.

Afternoon tea was served by Miss J Palmer and her assistants.

KAITUNA-FERNRIDGE GATHERING ADDRESS AND DEMONSTRATION (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Kai-luna-Fernridge Women’s' Institute was held at the home of Mrs lorns, Mrs Keir presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs Willet and Mrs Brunton, of the Wairarapa Federation, were welcomed. Mrs Willet gave a short address on Institute affairs. An interesting letter was read from one of the service men who had received a parcel from the Institute. A letter was read from Morgan Mulvaney thanking the residents of the district for the gift received by him before his departure overseas. Mrs Mannell, of Elizabeth Street, Masterton, gave a most interesting demonstration of articles made from felt hats, bringing with her an excellent display of a variety of things she had made.

Shoulder sprays, made by Mrs Scharnweber, were presented to Mesdames Willet, Brunton and Mannell. The flower competition was won byMrs J. Shaw, with Mrs Scharnweber second.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostess.
