POST SECTION PLAY SINGLES AND PAIRS CONTESTS. •SOME SURPRISE RESULTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN. January 13. From the singles section play today at the bowling tournament there are 18 two-lifers, so that 106 players will enter post-section play with one life and 35 with two lives. The following qualified today for post-section play in the pairs: C. H. Leith and- S. Riach (Taieri); W.H. Barton and J. H. Stephenson (Nelson); J. W. Thomas and W. W. Callender (Otago); J. F. Rendle and J. A. Eridges (Frankton Junction); A. Williamson and D. H. Joseph (Canterbury); B. W. Caulton and V. A. Bendel! (Greymouth); J. Lackington and H. H. Parrant (Mt. Eden); W. Cormack and A. G. Spiers (St. Kilda); A. Keast and C. H. Manning (Timaru); B. Grant and H. Kebby (Hornby); A. W. Alloo and H. C. Alloo (Owaka); C. J. Forbes and T. K. Watts (Beckenham); D. S. Dott and J. R. Smith (Elmwood); R. L. Taggart and A. V. Keast (Te Rangi); C. Tod and G. M. Doyle (Southbridge); W. Hillhouse and J. Armstrong (Runanga); C. L. Curtis and W. C. M. Sorenson (Carterton); W. Edgar and W. F. Mills (Tainui); J. Whyte and C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.); E. D. Edlin and J. B. Jack (Wanganui). _ The remaining 52 of the 70 sections in the pairs will be decided tomorrow and post-section play in both singles and pairs will start on Saturday. One of the sensations of the day was provided in the pairs competition by the Otago pair, J. W. Thomas and W. W. Callender, who beat the present champions, H. W. Maslin and IVI. J. Squire (Tawera), 21/20. Masiin and Squire were beaten again and failed to qualify. Two unbeaten combinations were A. W. Alloo and H. C. Alloo (Owaka) and the promising Tainui pair, W. Edgar and W. F. Mills. Several ex-champions were seen on the Kaikorai green and to emerge with I two lives, G. Gray (Kelburn) beat such well-known players as R. Haworth (Canterbury), 19/13, and H. C. Clarke (Carlton), 16/15. Haworth and Clarke also qualified. E. V/. Taylor (Carlton) beat J. Veitch (Dunedin) and eliminated him from the competition. S. Vella (Onehunga) was one of the most spectacular players among the onelifers, and he helped to eliminate the former pairs champion, C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn). Other surprises were when the winning pair at the British Empire Games in 1938, L. L. Macey and W. Denison (Auckland) both met defeat in the singles. HEAVY RAIN FALLING IN DUNEDIN TODAY. SC ME UPSETS IN GAMES PLAYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, IThis Day. I The weather was dull ana uninviting when play was resumed in the bowling I championships this morning. Some rain fell this morning, but it was not sufficient to halt the early games. The whole day will be devoted to the balance of the section play. In the pairs competition, 52 sections are being engaged on 26 greens. All entrants are taking part in the lour B' ameS - . • mt There were a lew surprises. The Linwood representatives, Archer and Redpath, went down 8/19 to the Roslyn pair, Armstrong and McKay. The defeat of Gardner and Anderson (Portobello) by the Carlton men, Findlay and Ross, 22/10, was the second upset. Anchor (Hamilton), who skipped the winning pair in 1937, had to lower his colours to the Anderson’s Bay representatives. Half way through the second round heavy rain fell, and the prospects for this afternoon are very poor.
