WHEAT CROPS
BUMPER HARVEST LIKELY.
LARGE AREAS OF PEAS BEING GROWN. Reports from various parts of the Wairarapa indicate that the wheat crops in the district are heading up nicely and promise a bumper harvest. Cross Seven is the most popular variety. The bountiful rain in the spring gave crops a splendid start. Throughout the district haymaking operations are still in swing and grasses are being threshed. The threshing of oats, wheat, red clover and peas will follow. It is stated that large areas of peas have been planted. Early crops of wheat are often threshed about the end of January and in February threshing operations reach a peak. Holdfast, a variety of wheat new to this district is being grown by Mr H. Evans, of Upper Plain. This crop, together with Cross Seven and Hunter’s varieties is coming along well. One crop will be cut on Monday. On a property adjoining Mr Evans’s farm there is a splendid crop of barley which is to be cut next week.
