RUBBING NOSES
MRS ROOSEVELT DEFENDS ' .'MAORI CUSTOM. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, December 18. Rubbing noses was probably much more sanitary than kissing, said Mrs Roosevelt at a Press conference when '.explaining a recently-published picture of her rubbing noses with a Maori woman in New Zealand. The picture has caused criticism in some quarters, including Congress. Mrs Roosevelt said that Guide Rangi, during her visit to New Zealand, had asked if she might greet her “as we greet all distinguished visitors.”
Mrs Roosevelt added that she was very glad her father had taught her how to do it properly. Rubbing noses was an old family custom.
