A Doctor Fined.

In the Wellington Magistrates Court yesterday, Sir James Elliott, (a doctor) of 43 Kent Terrace, pleaded guilty to a breach of the lighting regulations in the trial black-out of November 9. Mr. J. L .Stout, S.M., said he would have thought a doctor, knowing he might have to use his surgery, would have made provision for a proper black-out. A fine of £2 was imposed.

Interhouse Swimming Sports.

Active preparations are being made by the Wairarapa Interhouse Association for the forthcoming swimming sports, to be held next month. A team of girls is being trained by Misses Campbell and Stephenson, of the Physical Welfare Department, to put on a display of aquatic exercises, so as to provide some new features to the programme. The instructors will pay another visit* to Masterton next Thursday.

School Uniforms.

A statement that he was asking principals of post-primary schools to relax the usual rules regarding the wearing of school uniforms.' and not to insist upon the wearing of school uniforms in any case which involved hardship to the parents or waste of clothing materials was made by the Minister of Education, Mr. Mason, in Wellington yesterday. Mr.. Mason said that many schools had already relaxed their rules in regard to the wearing of school uniforms. It was realised that in normal times the wearing of school uniforms had many advantages, but a considerable demand was now being made upon the clothing industry by the armed forces, and the Government wished to reduce as much as possible the civilian demand for special shades and materials.
