COMMUNITY SERVICE

MASTERTON ROTARY CLUB WORK FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN. ENTERTAINMENT OF ORPHAN BOYS. At yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton Rotary Club the chief business was the receiving of reports from the club’s committees. The most interesting report was from Mr E. M. Hodder on “Boys Work” and more particularly on “Crippled Children.” Mr Hodder reported that during the last six weeks Mrs Kilgour, the local crippled children welfare officer, had travelled six hundred miles through the Wairarapa maintaining touch with the 123 cases oh the Society’s list and incidentally adding 9 new cases. Mr Hodder referred to the difficulties attaching to the educational and vocational training of these cripples, caused very often by the distance from the centres and he called on all members to interest themselves in this work. Arrangements were in hand for the Christmas dinner to be given to the orphan boys of Masterton.

Mr W. L. Butler, as chairman of the Vocational Service Committee, reported that his committee had been in touch with the Army authorities with a view to introducing vocational training, especially to the younger troops in the Wairarapa. Mr M. Armstrong, on behalf of the rural and urban committee, stated that it had been in touch with prominent scientific leaders in New Zealand on aspects of scientific farming and it was hoped to have some of these speakers in the New Year and it was intended to invite farmers to the meeting. Mr H. H. Daniell, on behalf of the community service committee, stressed the need for all members to take an active interest in town affairs. It was also pointed out that every citizen owed a duty- to the community to inform himself on all matters affecting the welfare of the country. Reports were also received from the Fellowship, Information, Membership and Programme committees.
