LAMB LOSSES IN CANTERBURY. LIGHT FALL IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Widespread falls of rain, hail and snow were experienced throughout Canterbury during the night, and although the fall has generally not been heavy, it was accompanied by a bitingly cold south-westerly wind. Reports received from the country indicate that fairly heavy losses will be experienced with spring lambs, as lambing season on the plains is now at its height. This morning the city was under a thin blanket of white. The fall was not sufficient to cause any traffic stoppages, but on the Cashmere Hills it was necessary to run a snow plough before trams could operate. Following this no difficulty was experienced. CONTRAST TO MIDWINTER. SOME SNOW IN SOUTH CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, This Day. Adverse weather has necessitated the postponement of the Ashburton races till tomorrow week, September 19, the first available date. Dry snow set in during the night, ranging from two or three inches on the high levels to a sprinkling along the coast. Today rain and an occasional flurry of snow is falling. Conditions are in striking contrast to the warm north-westerly weather of mid-winter.
