A Vichy communique states that British forces have launched a general attack against west coast ports of Madagascar. “After the De Gaullists’ vain attempt on September 8 to disembark northwards of Majunga,” it adds, “British forces, in the morning simultaneously attacked Majunga and Morondava. A large fleet of eighteen ships attacked Majunga and British planes flew over the island to a depth of more than 90 miles. The British launched the attack without more justification than when they attacked Diego Suarez bn May 5. All Frenchmen will condemn this unnameable act of aggression and their hearts will go out to the heroic defenders, fighting an unequal battle for France’s honour."
