WEATHER STATION

REMOVED FROM MASTERTON TO WAINGAWA. DECISION OF METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE. The weather station which has been located in Masterton for a considerable number of years is to be closed down by the Meteorological Office at the end of this year. Another station is being established at the Waingawa electric power sub-station. This decision has been made, following on unsuccessful negotiations with the Masterton Borough Council to set up the station in the Cemetery or the Park. The matter has been the subject of discussion between the two bodies for some months past. No suitable place is available in the Park, to comply with the conditions stipulated, and some councillors objected to the expense involved in fitting up the station and erecting a fence on a site in the Cemetery, a matter of about £BO, the view being held that the cost should be borne by the Meteorological Office and not by the council. The Meteorological Office (now conducted by the Royal New Zealand Air Force) has decided to set up another set of instruments at the Waingawa sub-station, sq that for the remainder cf the year a (comparison can be made between the Masterton and Waingawa readings. At the end of the year the Masterton station will be closed.
